Red Beads

JOSEPH FIRE CROW

Makoche Records

Enhanced CD

With only flutes, hand drum, and vocals JOSEPH FIRE CROW delivers a solid  album that covers lots of sounds, moods, ideas, themes, and much more.

Each song is a bead in a necklace of Native American music.

On the CD we  have war songs, prayers, ballads, chants, love songs, and war dances. A few are meditations in a way and with the lovely

and mystical flute, really are  perfect for contemplation or introspection.

Of note here is "My Brave Soldier Boy." This song was sung during WWII but it has life again as Native Americans serve in

dangerous places today.

This is a musically simple project but the basic elements of voice, flute, and drum make for a very attractive and listenable effort. Recommended.

NATIVE TALENT: If you felt some vibrations coming at you by way of Salem MA this past Sunday, you're not the only one. The resonant boom of Native American drumming -- courtesy of the Thunder Hawk Singers -- was just part of the entertainment at an afternoon concert presented by Salem's DONALD BLACKFOX and his company, RAVEN HAWK PRODUCTIONS. After the opening numbers by the Thunder Hawk troupe, GRANDFATHER SINGS ALONE and BLACK EAGLE treated us to traditional stories from the Cherokee and Narragansett nations.

The featured attraction of the event was the mesmerizing music of Cheyenne fluteman JOSEPH FIRECROW. His flute playing was surpassed only by his beautiful voice. Being part of the audience was an honor and a magical experience.

Mr. Blackfox told us that this was the first of several such events he has scheduled for the months ahead. In addition to their unquestionable entertainment value, the performances have an equally important purpose. Blackfox hopes that the sharing of Native American culture will help to bring about a positive change in the lives and future of all our children. Keep your ear to the ground for more news of Raven Hawk events. Better yet, zap Donald a note so he can put you on his mailing list.
